The Purple Friday Initiative
In the heart of Ballina, Cherry Street Sports sparked a grassroots movement that continues to ignite conversations and change lives. Born from tragedy following a devastating domestic violence incident in the wake of local floods, Purple Friday became a powerful response to a community in need of healing and unity.
Together with the Rotary Club of Ballina-on-Richmond, Cherry Street Sports launched an initiative that would see the town turn purple every Friday. This vibrant symbol of solidarity against domestic and family violence has rallied local businesses, schools and community organisations to proudly wear purple and declare that domestic violence has no place in our region. Cherry Sports Group has committed more than $30,000 to support this movement.
In May 2025, the campaign gained further momentum when ClubsNSW launched Clubs for Community: United Against Violence, a statewide effort to unite the club industry in tackling domestic and family violence. Now, six months on, the initiative is entering its next phase — a 12-month national action plan to strengthen engagement across metro and regional areas.
Led by ClubsNSW Head of Social Impact Arely Carrion, the program is guided by three pillars: advocacy, education and collaboration. The plan includes flexible training options, expert partnerships, and the development of a central online hub that offers consistent messaging, resources, and a calendar of events.
Carrion’s message is clear:
“Domestic and family violence isn’t somebody else’s problem. It affects every community, every club, and every person. Together, we are stronger.”
With more than 60 clubs already on board, the initiative reinforces the critical role that clubs play as trusted, community-centered spaces for awareness, support, and prevention.
The Purple Friday initiative proudly aligns with this mission. By promoting awareness, sparking conversations and building stronger networks, Cherry Street Sports continues to stand for a safer, more connected community — every Friday and every day.
